Rev. Bart Muller is a descendent of First Lieutenant Rudolph, First Sergeant Theodore, and Private Wilhelm Beutler, who, as members of the 20th New York United Turner Rifles, participated in the landing and battles of Forts Hatteras and Clark. The 20th was one of a large number of foreign-speaking regiments raised in New York and throughout the Union.  Originally from the lower East Side of New York City, these regiments reflected the struggle and pushback, and desire to fit into the life of America.  Rev. Muller will discuss the origins of the Turner movement, German nationalism, immigration and this hard luck regiment and its history after Hatteras.

The presentation is part of the museum’s Salty Dawg Speaker Series, which features presentations on North Carolina maritime history and culture. These programs are scheduled at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays from May 26 through Aug. 18 in the museum, located at 59200 Museum Drive in Hatteras. The series is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. Call 252-986-0723 for more information.
